About Ecodetect:
Ecodetect are an award-winning, advanced marine science and technology company specialising in the development of end-to-end, AI-driven, marine monitoring systems. Ecodetect exists to protect the health of our oceans while powering the future of sustainable energy.
As the world accelerates efforts to tackle climate change through offshore renewable infrastructure, we ensure this progress does not come at the expense of marine biodiversity. Our purpose is to make coexistence possible — between turbines and turtles, between innovation and ecology.
Anchored in environmental science, machine learning, and practical field experience, we make marine monitoring smarter, more scalable, and more responsive — so the energy transition can move forward without leaving the ocean behind.
Role Overview:
This is an exciting opportunity to join an award-winning, early-stage ClimateTech startup on an initial 12-month contract, with the potential to extend as the business grows to meet customer demand. We are building out our ML infrastructure to scale environmental intelligence and are looking for a hands-on ML Data Engineer who is ready to help shape this future. You will play a pivotal role in designing, building, and optimising robust data pipelines and ML systems on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Your work will help accelerate our ML capabilities—transforming environmental data into actionable models that power real-world solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ML infrastructure on GCP
Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SME) to train, deploy and optimise ML models across our product line.
Implement data quality and observability frameworks to ensure reliability and reproducibility
Automate data workflows and support model retraining processes
Support the design of feature stores and model monitoring tools
Contribute to architecture decisions for a scalable, resilient ML platform
Key Responsibilities:
A passion in solving environmental problems with technology
Proven experience in data engineering or ML engineering, with a strong track record of building scalable systems, ideally within a cloud environment
Strong proficiency with GCP services (e.g., BigQuery, Vertex AI, Dataflow, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub)
Proficient in Python and comfortable working with ML frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch or similar)
Proficiency in high-performance edge computing
Solid understanding of data modelling, pipeline orchestration, and MLOps best practices
Thrives in environments where initiative, autonomy, and curiosity are valued—comfortable taking a project from concept to deployment with minimal oversight.
Ability to travel for team events, occasional fieldwork or conference attendance
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and under time constraints
Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Time management and innovative thinking skills
Self-motivated team player with a proactive approach to learning and collaboration. Interest in ocean conservation, marine biology and the blue economy
Nice to Have:
Experience working with environmental or geospatial datasets
Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Renewable Energy Industry; Aquaculture; biodiversity assessments, seabed surveying
Experience of engagement with stakeholders and industries
Good knowledge of roles of key industry stakeholders
Familiarity with tools like Airflow, dbt, or Feast
