Job Title:
Business Development Associate (Part Time, 0.2-0.4 FTE, 12-month contract with potential to extend)

Location:
Applications are welcomed from across the UK. As Ecodetect aims to strengthen skills, capacity and economic activity within Wales, preference may be given to candidates based in Wales or with an established commitment to working within the Welsh marine and environmental sector. Regular travel to North Wales will be required.

Salary and hours:
8-16 hours per week (0.2-0.4 FTE). Flexible, remote working and job share options also considered.  Salary £40,000 FTE (£8,000 - £16,000 pro-rata for between 8 and 16 hours per week). Pension available. Generous holiday entitlement, including a flexible bank holiday scheme.

Role Overview:

We are seeking an ambitious and proactive Business Development Associate to help drive the growth of our business through the identification and conversion of commercial opportunities, successful grant funding applications, and strategic relationship building.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced business development professional who is equally comfortable identifying new sales opportunities, engaging with prospective clients, and preparing high-quality funding applications and tender responses. The successful candidate will play a key role in expanding our commercial pipeline, securing external funding, and supporting the long-term growth of the business.

The role requires someone who can quickly understand our products, services, and technical capabilities, identify how they address customer and market needs, and communicate their value effectively to clients, partners, and funding bodies.

Key Responsibilities:

Business Development & Sales

  • Develop a detailed understanding of the company’s products, services, and market sectors.

  • Identify and qualify new business opportunities across public and private sector markets.

  • Build and maintain a pipeline of prospective clients and strategic partners.

  • Generate, nurture, and convert sales leads into commercial opportunities.

  • Support contract negotiations and contribute to the successful conversion of opportunities into awarded work.

  • Conduct market and competitor research to identify emerging opportunities and trends.

 

Tender & Proposal Development

  • Monitor and identify relevant public and private sector tender opportunities.

  • Lead the preparation and submission of high-quality tender responses and commercial proposals.

  • Coordinate inputs from technical team members and partners to develop compelling bids.

  • Ensure submissions are compliant, competitive, and aligned with client requirements.

  • Maintain a library of proposal content and continually improve bid quality and efficiency.

 

Grant Funding & Research Opportunities

  • Identify relevant regional, national, and international grant funding opportunities.

  • Lead the development and submission of grant applications, including collaborative research and innovation funding bids.

  • Build relationships with research institutions, industry partners, and funding organisations.

  • Coordinate contributions from internal and external stakeholders to produce high-quality applications.

 

Networking & Representation

  • Attend relevant conferences, exhibitions, workshops, and networking events.

  • Represent the company professionally at client meetings and industry events.

  • Develop relationships with potential clients, partners, regulators, and other stakeholders.

  • Promote the company’s capabilities and identify opportunities for collaboration and growth.

 

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in business development, sales, bid management, grant funding, or a related role.

  • Demonstrable track record of securing grant funding and/or winning commercial contracts.

  • Experience preparing successful tender submissions and funding applications.

  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to produce clear, persuasive, and high-quality proposals.

  • Experience generating and converting leads into business opportunities.

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

  • Strong organisational and project management abilities.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple opportunities simultaneously.

  • Commercial awareness and understanding of business growth strategies.

 

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience working within the marine, environmental, renewable energy, technology, research, or innovation sectors.

  • Knowledge of UK and European grant funding programmes.

  • Existing network of contacts within relevant industry sectors.

  • Experience developing collaborative projects involving multiple partners and stakeholders.
